Anatomy of Heating
Heating systems also consist of three different parts: the heat generator; the heat transmitter; and the heat emitter. Each of these heating parts is also used to classify the types of heating systems. For instance, if we wish to classify them by the generator, we can speak of steam heating systems, hot water heating systems, warm air heating systems, and electric heating systems. GENERATING HEATING SYSTEMS
Heat can be generated in boilers as hot water or steam, in furnaces as warm air, and as electricity in a power plant. Or it can be extracted from a heat source by a heat pump.
Boilers for heating are either cast iron or steel. Cast iron boilers are built of cast iron sections which are assembled on the job. Water circulates inside of the casting, and fire on the outside. The great advantage of cast iron heating boilers is that even large boilers can be carried through a doorway and assembled on the job. In this way, heating boilers can be replaced without tearing out walls or roofs. On new construction it is not necessary to get the boiler into the boiler room before walls, floors, or roofs are erected. Within limits, cast iron boilers can be expanded by merely adding sections. Because of the thickness of the metal, corrosion causes less trouble than in steel boilers. Steel boilers are built in a variety of shapes, but they have in common the fact that they are built of tubes attached to headers called tube sheets. Most common on heating jobs is the fire tube boiler in which fire is on the inside of a tube and water on the outside. Generally restricted to process or very large central heating installations. Here, water is inside of the tube. Several heating manufacturers build water tube boilers in the smaller size range to compete with the fire tube. The steel boiler lends itself to power firing and packaging as a heat generator. It has the advantage of being assembled at the factory with a savings in field labor. After heating assembly, it is fire-tested and the consumer is assured of a heat generator that needs power and pipe connections for immediate efficient firing. Because of the thinness of the metal. the tubes are more subject to corrosion than cast iron sections. On the other hand, if a tube springs a leak in the winter, it is not necessary to shut down for a long period for repairs. In a matter of hours the leaking tube is plugged and not used. This is probably a good place to discuss draft. In order to have combustion, we must have oxygen. and after combustion, we must get rid of the products of combustion. A chimney serves this purpose. Its height and the difference in temperature between the flue gases and the ambient air determine the amount of air that will be induced into the boiler for combustion. This is called heating draft.
